In a world overflowing with tasks, to-do lists, and competing priorities, staying productive and focused has never been more challenging. Personal Kanban is a lightweight, visual workflow management method rooted in the Toyota Production System and adapted for individual use by Jim Benson and Tonianne DeMaria Barry.
What This Talk Covers#
Drawing on just two foundational rules, visualize your work and limit work in progress (WIP), Personal Kanban offers a simple yet powerful alternative to traditional to-do lists, which often leave us feeling overwhelmed rather than accomplished.
Attendees learn how to set up a Personal Kanban board using nothing more than sticky notes and a whiteboard, how to build and prioritize a backlog, and how to pull tasks through a Backlog, Doing, Done workflow.
Key Messages#
1. Visualize Your Work Making work visible is the first step to managing it. A simple board with sticky notes creates clarity about what you are working on, what is waiting, and what is done.
2. Limit Work in Progress Doing less at once means finishing more. By setting WIP limits, you reduce context switching and increase focus and throughput.
3. Continuously Improve The presentation explores advanced board patterns including blocked task columns, time-horizon lanes (Today / This Week / This Month), and personal retrospectives for continuous self-improvement.
